This week’s feature is the open play area at Carmelite Child Development Center, one room in a larger transformation we completed last year with M+H Architects. Overall, Carmelite wanted to create a welcoming space that felt like home, while also providing areas for simultaneous play and learning. Security, function, and durability were key problems that required unique fixes in order to accommodate their needs.

In particular, the new open play area needed to serve dual purposes as both a place to learn, but also as a place to burn off energy. Durable Shaw Contract LVT throughout the space provides easier cleanability, and the fun Milliken Floors carpet inset creates a “grassy” patch that not only provides a designated soft play area but also draws attention to the custom tree. Working with G&S Architectural Products, we created this custom wooden sculpture utilizing acoustical leaves to quiet the noise of a busy play area.

To round out the room, we added more functional storage to hold books, toys and learning supplies, fun pops of colors, and whimsical roofs over each entry, putting careful thought into each touchpoint.
